Research into new materials and material production processes is an essential key to the development of new economic and social innovations. Young researchers in the laboratories are already helping to shape our world of tomorrow. Whether inspired by biology or biodegradable; artificial intelligence or simply smart packaging; heat-resistant or climate-neutral: materials are everywhere. In the face of major societal challenges, however, it has long been a question not only of making materials more efficient, more durable or smarter, but also of how they can be used to shape a more liveable future. Doing without raw materials from overexploitation, battery materials for the energy transition or new, well-tolerated materials for bone implants are just a few examples.
